Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and WEF’s Chairman

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at a meeting of "Meeting of leaders on the ocean action agenda", an important event of WEF, affirmed that Vietnam will join hands in international cooperation for an ocean without plastic waste.

On the evening of January 23, at a discussion session on "Meeting of leaders on the ocean action agenda", an important event of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended and had a speech.

According to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, forecasting from the World Bank and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Vietnam will be one of the most heavily affected countries of climate change and increasing sea water. Without an effective response, by the end of the century, the sea will flood 40% of the Mekong Delta in the lower Mekong River, where nearly 20 million people live and which is a large granary of food for Vietnam and many countries. Therefore, according to the Prime Minister, whether the future of humanity is sustainable depends on the awareness and actions of each of us today. Vietnam will continue to join hands with countries for blue ocean and peace.

In order to minimize plastic waste and improve Vietnamese plastic industry, Vietnam has taken concrete actions such as actively participating in the establishment of a global cooperation mechanism for reducing plastic waste at the expanded G7 Summit in Canada by the end of 2018, and establishing the ASEAN Center for Plastic Waste at the World Economic Forum Conference on ASEAN in Vietnam last September.

On January 24, Vietnam and the World Economic Forum also signed a Letter of Intent to promote cooperation in the treatment of plastic waste, circulating the economy in Vietnam and proceeding to expand for ASEAN countries.
